CyberSafe and child protection policy make waves

As many as 2,147 cases of child abuse were reported to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the first quarter of this year, more than one–fourth of which was of a sexual nature (the above number also includes online abuses).

Over the past months, there has been high demand for Stairway’s online safety initiative, CyberSafe, as well as a demand for providing capacity building trainings on child protection policy formulation.

Below are a few highlights:

Stairway participates in the Preparatory Meeting for the Child Participation Baseline Study in the ASEAN and Member States last May 25, 2016.

Country representatives from the ASEAN member states learned about Stairway’s experience in ensuring child participation in the context of child online protection. Stairway shared it’s CyberSafe initiative, it’s cybersafe online safety sessions as well as the studies it conducts, and how important child participation is in the whole process.

Stairway presents in the 53rd Annual Philippine Pediatric Society Convention

Confirming the serious implications of online abuse, PPS has recently invited Stairway to present in the 53rd Annual Philippine Pediatric Society Convention on the topic of “CyberBullying”. Talking to pediatricians coming from different parts of the country, Stairway through its Senior Advocacy Officer, Ysrael Diloy, talked about Cyberbullying, how to address it, and the role of professional medical practitioners on early detection and referral.

Stairway continues to capacitate NGOs on child protection in Asia

As part of its role as the Asia Regional Trainer on Child Protection for KNH, Stairway continues to provide capacity building trainings on child protection policy formulation as well as child protection programming to partner NGOs of KNH, ChildFund, TDH and Karl Kubel Foundation in India. Under the project, Stairway  conducts these capacity building trainings to mentor these organizations on how to craft responsive localized child protection policies, as well as integrate child protection education into the partner NGOs own programs. Using Stairway’s experience in the child protection field, participants get to know how child protection can be mainstreamed into organizational systems and programs.
