This is an evaluation research that made use of a survey questionnaire to determine the effects of showing the “Good Boy” and “Daughter” videos, without processing. Effects are gauged in terms of the learning that takes place among the audience after watching the two videos.

Learning refers to predetermined learning points in the areas of (1) disclosure, (2) knowledge about the dynamics of sexual abuse, and (3) preempting abuse, factors that are deemed necessary for people in society to have, in order to combat child sexual abuse. These predetermined learning points formed the basis of the constructed questionnaire.

The variables included in the study are gender, grade level (Grades 5-6, Year 1-2, Year 3-4), type of school (private, public), and type of community (urban, rural).

Abstract

This study evaluated the Cracked Mirrors theater production for advocacy against child sexual abuse and exploitation.
Through the literature review, the need for creative advocacy projects and the reasons to evaluate those projects are clearly presented. Also presented in the literature is the importance of changing the way society views and ignores the victims of sexual abuse.
The Cracked Mirrors performance incorporates rap and song into a series of four monologues to express the painful realities of child sexual abuse and exploitation. This evaluation study utilized a survey questionnaire to randomly poll 446 audience members from nine showings in 5 separate venues within Manila, Philippines. Respondents represented various ages and countries but were not asked for any personal information.

Stairway has been involved with advocacy on Children’s Rights and Child Sexual Abuse Prevention for a substantial number of years already, raising awareness among different sectors of society regarding the importance of “Breaking the Silence” surrounding the issue of Child Sexual Abuse. Being involved primarily with prevention work, Stairway has always seen the importance of addressing the issue on a holistic manner. Giving importance to prevention and advocacy work would entail addressing the need to also strengthen the other side of the equation of the child protection field – the reactive/aftercare sector.

Stairway's advocacy theatre actors: Jhonnie, Susan and Jhao just came home from a line-up of performances in Denmark, Germany and Belgium.  Performing for the Stairway Film and Theatre Campaign against Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation (CSAE) European Tour, under the guidance of Stairway's Artistic Director, Monica D. Ray, the trio performed "Cracked Mirrors," a play on child sexual abuse and exploitation in various venues and varied audiences for the whole month of September.  In this short interview, they shared their thoughts on what they call a unique and life-changing experience.

Summary:

“A Good Boy” is a story of pedophilia. “Daughter” is about a 12-year-old girl, who becomes a victim of sexual abuse by her own father. These two animations were produced by Stairway Foundation, Inc. in an effort to educate the public about the largely hidden problem of child sexual abuse. They assist the public in addressing subjects that are very hard to talk openly about, but which must be talked about as a matter of urgency and if we are going to prevent further damage to vulnerable individuals and to society.
